Bulldogs' volleyball coach out instantly

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity made his first major coaching move since taking over earlier this fall Monday when he dismissed volleyball coach Joel McCartney, effective immediately.

Georgia has an 11-14 overall record, but a 3-11 mark in the Southeastern Conference, which is third-worst in the league. Georgia has seven matches remaining in the regular season, including six in the SEC.

"We felt like the time was right to make that decision and we did so today," McGarity said. "We just really need to move in a different direction after looking at the program's entirety."

Assistant coach Chad Hanson will take over as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season and a national search for McCartney's replacement will begin immediately.

Georgia has lost eight of its last 10 matches, including its last five in a row. McCartney was in his fourth season as the Bulldogs' coach. He had a 62-55 overall record and 29-45 league record.

McCartney came to Georgia after coaching at Winthrop for six seasons.
